1939 Royal Enfield 250 SF

250cc was a very popular engine size from the 1930s right through to the 1970s and Royal Enfield produced many. The Model S first saw the light of day in 1935 and had a 250cc sloper engine. The S2 tuned version was the 250 Bullet of that year. By 1937 the engine was upright and the bike received very favourable reviews in period publications as an exceptionally versatile and reliable mount.
In 1939, the timing side of the engine was redesigned, sharing the same arrangement as the 250 side-valve Model D and ignition was changed to a coil with a Lucas dynamo charging the battery.

I know very little about the early life of my SF. However, it had been in Lancashire for at least 30 years before I acquired it. The engine was restored by friend and ace engine builder, Andy Berry, in the 1980s. When its last owner passed away, Andy was asked to help sell his bikes and alerted me to this one. I fell instantly in love with it.
